As the title indicates, two issues are discussed in this thesis: the scientific status of psychoanalysis, especially that of the classical Freudian analysis (ego psychology), and its use within musicology.
The history of psychoanalysis is discussed first, then its theory in the light of knowledge theory and modern virtue epistemology, as explicated by Linda T. Zagzebski. Psychoanalysis and virtue epistemology appear to support each other. It is proposed that psychoanalysis studies real and concrete psychical phenomena and provides trustworthy knowledge of them.
The arguments by six critics of psychoanalysis — Sir Karl R. Popper, Adolf Grünbaum, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Elias Canetti, Edvard Westermarck, and Richard Webster — are analyzed. In some cases the critical reproaches can be responded to, in others it may be pointed out that they do not concern actual psychoanalysis, or psychoanalytic theory can be modified so that it matches better with the demands of scientific research.
The relationship between psychoanalysis and hermeneutics is considered critically. Instead of interpreting psychoanalysis hermeneutically, it is proposed that psychoanalysis can aid the hermeneutician to cultivate his or her personality.
In the last portion of the thesis, several basic concepts of psychoanalysis are applied to music: primary process, dream work, drive, ego, super-ego, binding, projection, identification, and transitional object. Aided by them, the psychical dynamics of musicians and listeners and, for example, an orchestral conductor can be examined and hypotheses concerning the psychical actions and dependencies can be suggested.

Wie die Überschrift andeutet, werden in dieser Abhandlung zwei Probleme erforscht: die Wissenschaftlichkeit der Psychoanalyse, insbesondere der klassischen Psychoanalyse Sigmund Freuds (der Ich-Psychologie), und ihre praktische Verwertung in der Musikwissenschaft.
Zuerst wird die Geschichte der Psychoanalyse betrachtet. Dann wird die psychoanalytische Theorie in Hinsicht auf die Erkenntnistheorie und die moderne Tugend-Epistemologie Linda T. Zagzebskis dargestellt. Die Psychoanalyse und die Tugend-Epistemologie stützen einander. Es wird vorgebracht, dass die Psychoanalyse wirkliche und reelle psychische Phänomene erforscht und zuverlässige Erkenntnisse von ihnen bietet.
Die Argumente von sechs Kritikern der Psychoanalyse — Karl R. Popper, Adolf Grünbaum, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Elias Canetti, Edvard Westermarck und Richard Webster — werden analysiert. Entweder kann man die kritischen Vorwürfe beantworten, oder man kann darauf verweisen, dass sie die reelle Psychoanalyse überhaupt nicht betreffen, oder man kann die Psychoanalyse modifizieren, so dass sie den Anforderungen der Wissenschaftlichkeit besser entspricht.
Das Verhältnis zwischen der Hermeneutik udnd der Psychoanalyse wird kritisch betrachtet. Die Psychoanalyse wird nicht hermeneutisch gedeutet, sondern die Psychoanalyse kann dem Hermeneutiker helfen, seine Persönlichkeit zu kultivieren.
